Shakira dispels film debut

News that the popular Colombian singer Shakira was going to enter the film industry, acting in the movie "Dare to Love Me," which tells the story of Argentine tango singer Carlos Gardel's life, is still circulating. However, the Colombian star's public relations office denied this information in an exclusive with portal Peopleenespanol.com.

Shakira "That is totally untrue," public relations agency Rogers and Cowan, who manage popular Shakira's press relations, told Peopleenespanol.com. The film in which the Colombian was supposedly going to act is about the life of popular tango singer Carlos Gardel and its cast includes Paz Vega and the Brazilian Rodrigo Santoro.

According to rumors this week, Shakira was going to play one of Carlos Gardel's lovers and filming would take place in France and Romania. The movie will be directed by Alfonso Arau, responsible for "Como agua para chocolate" and "Zapata."

These rumors were spread by the Colombian radio station Caracol, who said last Sunday that Shakira "will share the screen with Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro and the Spaniard Paz Vega." "Santoro will play Gardel, while Shakira will play one of the mythic tango singer's lovers," said the report.

"With a 10 million dollar budget, 'El dia que me quieras' will be directed by the Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Arau and will be filmed mainly in Paris and Bucarest," it added. "Cinematography will be done by Vittorio Storaro (The Last Emperor,) the editor will be Luis Enriquez Bacalov (The Mailman,) and the film will be financed by Chelsea Films, an independent production company based in Miami."

"The film is currently in the pre-production phase and filming will begin in March 2007, to release the film at the end of that year," said the Colombian radio station Caracol. The information was later reported by various other media and press agencies around the world.
